Migration: To move from one place to another. Example: The Germans migrated from Germany to America.
Immigrant: Someone who migrates into another country permanently. Example: The Chinese were immigrants to America.
Emigrant: Someone who moves out of their country and goes to another. Example: The Irish emigrated out of Ireland and moved to America.
Push-Pull Migration Theory: A theory that says people leave a country because something happens that makes it harder to live (push) and that people move into a different country because of what it offers (pull). Example: A Push factor of the Irish was a potato famine. A pull factor for many people was the Gold Rush.
Environment: The surrounding things, conditions, or influences of a place. Example: Many groups, including the Scandinavians, migrated because of a poor environment such as famine.
Exploitation: The use or utilization of something to usually make a profit. Example: The U.S. exploited the Gold Rush to draw people in.
